The unique nature and culture of Hengchun peninsula successfully capture the public’s eyes because of the film Cape No. 7. Now, Hengchun has become an international tourist spot.
Although the Hengchun city walls were built more than 130 years ago, the four main entrances are still preserved well. The 2.6 km city wall, the longest city wall in Taiwan, is also well kept. The folk song master, Mr. Ta Chen, introduced the local folk music of Hengchu to the entire Taiwan, and even to the stage of the National Concert Hall, giving the public an opportunity to be bathed in the fabulous melodies.
In November 2008, Pingtung County Government registered Hengchun folk music as important traditional music. In 2008, the County Government held “Wind and Tide—International Singing Festival” as a platform to introduce Hengchun folk music to the world as well as for the cultural exchange among different bands from the world.
The 2009 Hengchun International Folk Music Festival will be held in Pingtung City and Hengchun from 5th September to 12th September. This year’s theme is “Wind and Tide—Take a Deep Breath.” The Festival will present you both the local and the world music. With the traditional music from the world, we want to call the public’s attention to the environmental problems and the awareness of protecting the Earth.
In summer 2009, we invite you to come to Hengchun to experience the traditional folk culture from the Chiang-Ku competitions and the folk music in the Folk Music Festival. Wonders and music are characteristic of the summer in Hengchun. No matter where you are from, please join us for this wonderful “Fringe Festival.”
